The interiors are designed impressively and the flawless dashboard with its dual tone look is eye-catching. The central console gets a lot of metallic inserts along with some chrome lining. The instrument cluster with chrome surround, too, look sleek and the steering wheel looks much better than that of the Vista. The rear seats are comfortable too – there’s good headroom, and with the scooped out rear of the front seats, there’s even more knee room than before. Tata hasn’t announced how many variants there will be yet. In terms of features, there were projector lamps and a touchscreen infotainment system developed in conjunction with Harman that features voice controls and navigation. Also an SD card reader, along with a trip computer, power windows, power mirrors, parking sensors and climate control. The bolt will be loaded with a range of features and connectivity option thanks to the Herman system on board.

There is unmatched space inside the cabin and the seats wrapped in premium fabric are well-cushioned. The cabin accommodates five, offering comfortable leg and shoulder space. Other features include 5 inch touch screen display that supports a music system, blue-tooth, USB, AUX-in and steering mounted audio and call connectivity buttons. The front seats, however, are excellent. They are accommodating and snug at the same time, and Tata engineers spent a lot of time optimizing the side bolsters, the seat base bolsters and even the cushioning. The attention to detail even extends to the seat belt webbing and the retractor mechanism that have been designed to feel smoother and richer in the way they operate. Other features include ABS with EBD, side impact protection, central locking, keyless entry and parking sensors. At the same time, it also gets several advanced safety features like a 9th generation ABS mechanism, which is developed by Bosch and corner stability control, which eventually makes it simpler to handle this hatchback.

The automaker is also offering it touchscreen infotainment system designed by Harman, which is one of the best part of this hatchback. This system supports voice command recognition system, which helps to make calls, controls the HVAC unit and changes the audio track all without touching any button at all. For the first time in the segment, it also gets four speakers and four tweeters, which produces a captivating surround audio effect. This hatchback series also gets a fully automatic air conditioning unit featuring touchscreen controls on infotainment screen. As far as its interiors are concerned, it gets an attractive Java Black color scheme, which is complimented by a lot of metallic accents at different places all around the insides. The automaker claims that this small car has the segment’s best interior space along with excellent leg and shoulder space for all its occupants. Its cabin is furnished with rugby shoulder seats, which provides excellent support to the body and makes it further comfortable while traveling longer distances.

The exteriors of the car looks impressive thanks to its new design language. The front fascia looks aggressive as well. The sleekly designed headlight clusters with halogen lamps and turn indicators enhance the look from the front. The headlight stretches from the middle of the bonnet to the grille. The new ‘Humanity Line’ grille with the projector headlights differentiates the Bolt from the Vista. This vehicle has a breathtaking external appearance, as it is skilfully decorated with snazzy exterior features all round. The chrome element at the bottom of the lamps look like LED DRLs, though these are just reflectors. The front bumper is big and sculpted with an equally big trapezoidal air dam. It also houses the fog lamp console that gets chrome inserts. It is blessed with unique aspects like smoked projector headlamps, dynamic alloy wheels and ‘Flame-shaped’ taillight cluster. The wide air intake and fog lamps bezels give a dynamic look to the frontage. The side profile features aerodynamic design and body-colored ORVM caps and door-handles. In the rear, the boot is stylishly designed with thick chrome-plated strip fitted on it. The rear gets rounded edges and has a premium look as well.

The stylish spoiler with a high mounted stop lamp and the sleekly crafted tail-lamp clusters enhance the overall rear view. The bonnet gets V-shaped creases at the centre and a pair of lines on the side that sort of form a border. It is however same as that of the Vista in silhouette. The front grille with chrome stripe on the top is also like that of the Vista, only a little more defined.  The new headlamps on the other hand look very nice with the blacked-out interior and the segment first projector units. Though the silhouette might give an impression that the Bolt is similar to the Indica, the design philosophy is completely new. The fascia sports a new grille, revised headlamps with projectors, fog lamps and a revamped bumper. On the sides, the window lines swoop down in a curve towards the rear hatch which is now devoid of the Christmas tree lamps. However, what the rear does get are rounded edges and certain styling cues from slightly more premium cars. The Zest looks a little odd due to the compact sedan philosophy but the Bolt looks like a much more complete product.

The rear design is unlike any of the Tata cars. The bumper at the back is again extremely fat and is moulded in an interesting shape with pointed ends.  The tail lamp console is compact and horizontal; a lot different from the Christmas tree-styled vertical design we are used to seeing on the Tata cars. The new tail lights, high and low mount stop lamps, and a chrome grille are some of the features seen at the back of the vehicle. It also gets a chrome stripe along with the Bolt, Revotron and XT (variant) badging. The overall design of the Tata Bolt is nice and the car certainly looks premium. However, I was hoping that the new hatchback would completely move away from the Indica design and hence am not too happy that the front still is reminiscent of the Vista. I know I am sounding cheesy here but, probably it will be a little easier to get bolts out of the Indica, than to get Indica out of the Bolt.

The new electric power steering is wonderful at city speeds and also weighs up pretty well for the highways. Like in all the EPS (electronic power steering) on budget cars, the feel is lacking; however, this one provides decent feedback. The NVH levels are decent even at high speeds and the part of the credit goes to the Good Year 175/65 R15 tyres. The Bolt comes fitted with disc and drum brake mechanism. The suspension system is robust. Handling of the car is easier thanks to the cornering stability feature and the advanced electric power assisted steering wheel.

The ride quality at city speeds is surprisingly good. Direct steering also feels just right for the job at hand. We went through a number of potholes in Udaipur city and the Bolt managed to flatten everything without even a squeak entering the cabin. It feels soft and Tata has used a new dual path suspension at the front that has also improved the handling without compromising the ride.

The Bolt comes in Petrol and diesel variants. The petrol variant is fitted with the newly announced 1.2 liter turbocharged four cylinder Revotron motor capable of generating 85 bhp of power and 140 Nm of torque. The power is distributed to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine is the tried and tested Fiat-licensed, 1.3-litre Multijet and Tata says that the 50kg weight reduction achieved with the modifications to the chassis and body along with better ECU calibration and fueling has helped minimize the weak bottom-end responses that this engine is notorious for. The Bolt will get the Multijet with the fixed-geometry turbo that amounts to 74bhp. The diesel engine features the familiar 1.3 liter Quadrajet engine putting out 75 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque.

Powring the Bolt, is a 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged Multi-point Fuel Injection (MPFi) mill, good for 90 bhp and peak torque of 140 Nm and a 1.3-litre diesel unit, rated at 75 bhp and 190 Nm of peak torque. A five-speed manual gearbox will come as standard across all variants, with no AMT, even as optional. The petrol variants are powered by a critically acclaimed 1.2-litre Revotron engine that can churn out 83.83bhp along with a maximum torque of 140Nm. On the other hand, its diesel variants are blessed with a powerful and well known 1.3-litre Quadrajet engine. Both these engines are mated to a five speed manual transmission gearbox that sends out the torque output to its front wheels.
