The Volkswagen Passat is a big family car produced by the German manufacturer Volkswagen since 1973, through eight design generations. It is positioned between the Volkswagen Golf (Jetta) and the Volkswagen Phaeton in the current Volkswagen line-up and its derivatives have been badged variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat. The successful generations of the Passat carry the Volkswagen internal designations B1, B2, etc. Volkswagen currently markets two variants of the Passat globally. In January 2011, Volkswagen announced that the new mid-size sedan (NMS) being manufactured at the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant for the North American market would be named the Passat. Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive also manufactures the Passat NMS in its Nanjing factory. Now this Passat is about to launch in the country India after 2015 and in February 2016.
A new Passat B8 model began development in Europe in 2014. It is based on the MQB platform and will be available as a 4-door and a 5-door Variant. There will be 3 equipment lines. First of them is Trend-line, then Comfort-line, and the most luxurious one is High-line. The new VW Passat (B8) is expected to launch in India only in February 2016, says a report of one of the popular magazines in India. The publication says that a list of reasons are delaying the launch of the luxury sedan in the country, but the company is irregardless committed on launching the car.
For the Indian model, the new Passat’s 2.0-liter TDI engine will need to pass through Indian norms and BS-4 emission norms. While the Passat’s engine complies with stricter norms in Europe, Volkswagen is likely to adapt it for BS-4 norms in India to save costs on expensive hardware, and for making it better suitable for our fuel quality.
Also, if we compared to the previous generation Volkswagen Passat, VW India could increase the localization levels of the car to arrive at better pricing, but a plant raise is expected to delay this process. And at last, thanks to international demand, the Indian arm of the German car maker needs to queue up for allocation of kits. Based on the new MQB architecture, the new Passat is 85 kg lighter than its last model. Alongside regular four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, VW also showed the Passat GTE at the Paris Motor Show in October last year 2014. Competitors in India of this car are- Hyundai Sonata, Skoda Superb and Toyota Camry which give complete rivalry to this new Passat. In India this Volkswagen would come with the price tag of 20 to 25 lakhs onwards.
If we talk about the features of this Passat Model then we can say which are provided to the International market are follows: Proactive Occupant Protection (similar to Mercedes-Benz Pre-Safe), which will close the windows and retract the safety belts to remove excess slack if the potential for a forward crash is detected. Multi-collision brake system to automatically brake the car after an accident in order to avoid a second collision, lane assist, side assist, Driver drowsiness detection, traffic sign recognition system, Dynamic Light Assist glare-free high beam, Trailer Assist, automatic parking system etc are there which are provide and Indian Market is also hoping to have those features too.
