Mercedes had already shown the petrol version of the C–Class back in November 2014, which is imported as a CBU model. Similarly, the newly launched diesel version will follow the CBU route for a few months before it is assembled.
The car is powered by the familiar 2.2-liter 4 cylinder diesel motor producing 167.6 bhp between 3,000-4,200 rpm and 400 Nm between 1,400-2,800 rpm. The power is transmitted to rear wheels via a 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission to the rear wheels, enabling it to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 233 km/h.The German car manufacturer claims an ARAI rated efficiency of 19.27 km/l for the diesel powered C–Class. Unlike old Mercs, new models like the C–Class come with five Agility settings – Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. These switch the engine, AC and steering of the vehicle in the C–Class. In Eco, the motor takes it easy and the gearbox shifts with utter secrecy but the punch is missing. Things get better (from the performance perspective) with each mode, S+ being the most intense of them all where power is quite spiky, making it best for use on the open road.
Mercedes Benz Exterior
On the exterior front, the C–Class is has great influence by its flagship brother, the S-Class. Both variants will be fitted with LED headlamps and DRLs, which features adaptive lighting. While the C220 CDI Style will come with multi-spoke 16-inch alloy rims, the Avantgarde variant features a 5-twin-spoke alloy rims. There is also a two pin plug for charging of your laptop.
In Multimedia thing, it comes fitted with a tablet a like infotainment display powered by Mercedes’ software with a touch pad for navigation. It comes preloaded with Garmin maps for street-by-street navigation. Other features include three-color ambient lighting, panoramic roof, Keyless entry with push button start/stop, and a respectable boot space of 480 liters. There are a ton of features on offer and the C–Class can catch up with its immediate elder brother in terms of equipment, that’s how fully loaded it is.
Mercedes-Benz is on a roll of winning markets and its second launch for the year, the C–Class diesel is bound to get them more volumes. The new C–Class is without doubt expensive but you do receive your money’s worth thanks to the level of kit thrown in. The diesel engine offers good performance and is economical too, ensuring buyers of this luxury car have little to complain about. Mercedes will bring in the locally assembled model later in the year, in a lower trim but even as a CBU, the diesel C–Class makes for an excellent package.
