The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury crossover Sports Utility Vehicles manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars, introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and now in its second generation. Manufactured at Volvo’s Torslandaverken (Torlanda Works), the first generation XC90 used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. The XC90 is Volvo’s top-selling vehicle in the United States and also Volvo‘s best selling model worldwide in 2005 — with 85,994 cars sold.
The new Volvo XC90 SUV has been launched at a starting price of Rs 64.9 lakh for the Momentum trim. The top Inscription trim is priced at Rs 77.9 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai without Octroi). Dealers have already started accepting bookings at Rs 5 lakh with deliveries expected to begin in September.

The second-generation Volvo, based on an all-new scalable product architecture platform, is quite a looker as it gets a discernable grille coupled with T-shaped running lights, nicknamed ‘Thor’s Hammer’ by the design team.
Volvo XC90 Design and looks
The 2015 XC90 carries all-new styling, but is still familiar up front, with the company’s logo slashing diagonally through its prominent, upright grille. Like the concept, it carries T-Shaped LED running lights through the headlights. The company calls them the “Thor’s Hammer” design, an unique designation that we think is pretty refreshing. The car’s strong shoulder line moulds into the car’s long sculpted bonnet, giving the car an aggressive “THOR-LIKE” stance.
Volvo XC90 Technical Specs
At its heart is the latest-generation 2.0-litre, four-cylinder D5 diesel engine churning out 225bhp with 48kgm of pulling power, as against the outgoing XC90’s 2.4-litre, five-cylinder diesel. Power is sent to all four wheels via the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 400bhp T8 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid option is expected some time next year.
Volvo XC90 Safety Features
Volvo traditionally packs the car with some great safety enhancements and the XC90 does not disappoint either. The luxury SUV comes loaded with the ‘Run-off road protection package’ that absorbs the energy between the seat and frame providing a cushion, and also the ‘Intersection braking system’ that stops the SUV if it tries to pull in front of an oncoming car, apart from the usual host of safety equipment on offer.
Inside Volvo XC90
The interiors get a clean, clutter-free design for the dashboard with the center console being dominated by a large touch-screen armed with the latest infotainment software. This panel will control a majority of the functions in the car. For the comfort of the passengers, Volvo has added a new four-zone climate system with clean zone air purification system which offers individual settings for the first and the second row. Another impressive fact is the Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 19 speakers, 7 tweeters and 4 cone woofers.
